Compelling story of a Dutch family during the German occupation of the Netherlands. Beautiful themes of compassion, duty, forgiveness. A thoughtful, moving story that will cause you to pause and think and rejoice without sappy manipulation so common in contemporary children's literature. The Verhagen family, who live in the old windmill called the Winged Watchman, are a memorable set of individuals whose lives powerfully demonstrate the resilience of those who suffer but do not lose faith.
